Re: Outpost 3 and blue screen

    hi there,

what is the exact error you are getting? not aware of any dsl stop error myself (i use adsl at home here) please provide as much info, log items, error codes, any drivers referenced in the blue screen, etc. the more info provided the better chance we have of helping.

also, which version of outpost, which version of windows, and any details on your pc may also help. have you had any other firewalls previously installed? have you disabled the internal windows xp version if you have xp? any other programs running automatically on startup like an anti-virus, etc.

while agnitum is working hard to fix bugs as fast as they can, it is next to impossible to forecast when they will be done & ready to put out the next release. it's like a doctor operating on your tumor, it takes as long as it takes, and not a moment sooner - there always are unforseen circumstances that pop up which may delay completion, i'm sure if it happens to be your tumor, you don't want the doctor to leave anything behind just to meet a deadline.

    regards,

    kronckew

edited: i see you have a number of problems posted which are related to the adsl one in other threads, and this is best resolved there, if you have a new bsod problem, please supply as much info as possible.

ok, next time it happens, write down the exact error & error number, it will be something like

    IRQ_NOT_LESS_THAN_OR_EQUAL

    error 0x0000008E

and confirm it is in the protect.dll library module ( see other info which might help above )

does it happen every time, is it consistantly happening when you perform a certain operation, anything in your logs or system event logs? as above, the more you tell us the better chance we can help.

I experience BSOD with 3.0 also but only since i changed System to a Dual Core Athlon. My P4 did run flawlessly. The software that runs is the same its just another processor and more RAM.
I switched to Zonealarm for the time beeing just to proove its outpost that causes the problems. ZA is running for three days now without a problem. When i switch back in acouple of weeks i will wite down the IRQ_LESS Number.

I wonder if this could have something to do with hyperthreading and multi-threads? I recently upgraded from an AMD Athlon 2500 to Dual core and am getting BSODs as well (where I didn't with the old CPU). Didn't write down anything either and am using Kerio now. I'm thinking about reinstalling though and using a blank config file instead of importing my old one and setting the processor affinity to 1 to see if that fixes it. OP was only firewall that blocked active content correctly (ZA implements it but it's exception list is patheticly bugged, Kerio seems to have it as well but from what I can see it doesn't actually work) and besides, I just have more faith in OP - just BSODs suck.

hmm must be some dual core Athlon issue then. Can someone confirm we can use OP with 3.5 again on our systems? Otherwise i will go for a refund if OP is not running on my system and not stated otherwise.

Re: Outpost 3 and blue screen

Well I'm not sure if that's the problem or not. I went ahead and reloaded Outpost and set the Processor Affinity to a single CPU. Been about a day and so far so good... knock on wood. I guess it wouldn't suprise me if OP had a problem with multithreading, as I've had a couple other programs act buggy until I disabled one of the cores for that program. But, even if problem is fixed for me, I can't absolutely say its an issue with dual cores, as I also deleted my old configuration file and started from scratch.

But even if it was, why bother with a refund if you are otherwise happy with OP? Setting the affinity for OP is pretty easy and the firewall barely uses the CPU anyway so performance isn't affected at all. I'd recomend reinstalling OP and setting the affinity and see if it works for you (you can do this by opening the Windows task manager and right clicking outpost.exe).

Really, it is an evidence the problem is issued by the dual core. I don't understand why Agnitum is so slow to react. I have two DELL Dimension 9150 with Intel D820 (dual core) and both have the same problem. BSOD DRIVER IRQL NOT LESS OR EQUAL without file.sys. A utility provided by DELL indicate FILTNT.SYS as the faulty. Now I'm waiting with the XP firewall (???). I hope Agnitum will quick react before I change my firewall (perfect but ...).

Re: Outpost 3 and blue screen

i have an HT pentium4 & after replacing my nvidia drivers with the whql certified ones recc. by the card mfg (NOT nvdia) i've had no problems either in 3.0 or 3.5.641/458, however i've also set DEP to off for outpost, firefox and another semi-browser product that acts as a browser. not entirely sure it's related but worth a try.

(it's in [right click 'my computer' or use control panel - system] "system properties" - advanced tab, performance 'settings' button - Data execution prevention tab, turn on for everything Except - then add outpost, and possibly your browser's, executeable.)

p.s. - it does help, y'all, if you write down the error numbers that appear with the irql bsod's as not all are the same......they are hardware driver to interrupt request line errors and occasionally the numbers help pin down what hardware it's affecting....

Outpost usually runs pretty good for me but I got a BSOD in protect.dll. Unfortunately, my motherboard crashed a week after that so I guess I found out what my problem was.

i've subscribed to this board just to say outpost is a GREAT firewall, really,
however the BSOD is a recurrent problem i've had almost with all versions,
and on many pc with different cpu, graphic cards, mother boards etc etc.
the only solution i've found has been..to switch to an other firewall,
and i feel really more relaxed.

    see ya.

    hope well in future releases.

Re: Outpost 3 and blue screen

Trying your recommendations. Graphic card is an nVidia -> good driver. Set DEP to off for outpost and so one. Tried also to set affinity for OP on only one processor but this operation was forbidden by Xp ( ???).
And BSOD is already there …

    Famous firewall with famous problem.
    I will continue to search.
