These files can be deleted automatically when you unistall the product.
To delete manualy you have to make hidden files visible. You'll then be able to see them in any file manager and delete away.
mmm... I'm fully satisfied with the functionality of the security suite this far and an uninstall is not an option yet...
By the way it's only four directories.
emulated DOS-command "attrib -H" doesn't work.
sysinternals "sdelete" doesn't see the hidden files.
rootkitrevealer hungs on enumerating files.
blackice from f-secure doesn't tell in what directory the hidden files have been found (there are quite a lot of them with OSS2008 in the system).
-Any shortcuts that sprung up to your mind, to get a "smarter control" on those "soliidly temporarily" op_cache.* files?![]()
Basicaly, these files make OP scan faster because it remembers the status of files so they aren't scanned if they haven't changed. They are useful to have around even though detected by antirootkit programs. They are quite harmless and useful. I suggest you leave them.
Nevertheless, the way to make hidden files and folders visible in XP is by using Folder Options in Control Panel:
.
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click Folder Options
- On the View tab, under Hidden files and folders, click Show hidden files and folders
And on mine computer they stay hidden
btw i have similar problem. Windows Update creates some folders like :
"94689546sfdg9sf7-87h8dfgh" or "8a7sd6fa87g8f7h68dsh" and i cant delete them because of 2 files created by OSS (directories look empty normaly). Only way to delete them is to go Safe Mode, Take ownership of files and give to all users Full rights. Any better solution than this ?
I'm not aware of a better way. When ownership rights get confused that way to fix it is as you say by taking ownership in safe mode if necessary. The overall problem is likely due to improper installation or a corrupt configuration of some of the various users. It will probably take a repair install to fix the issue since tracking down the exact cause of the issue might be impossible or at least darn difficult.
I have the same problem. If I set folder options to show hidden files and system files the problem directory (not neccessarily a install folder) still doesn't show any files present. If I try to permanently delete the folder, I receive a cannot delete directory...directory not empty. This is when I get out winhex and look at the disk and zero out the file records in the problem folder..as a safe guard I also do a chkdsk /f and reboot..only then can I successfully delete the folder. I have tried permissions, safe mode, countless fixes on the net and the winhex solution is the only way to I have been able to fix it.
The problem with undeletable op_cache files has been around since Agnitum implemented that feature in OSS, I have reported this very problem to Agnitum several times.
I usually create and remove folders many times a day and I got this pesky problem each and every day. It could happen everywhere, the behaviour really seemed random.
The only way I could delete op_cache files was by booting into my other Windows in my PC. Then all op_cache files was deletable. Phew!
I will never user that caching feature until Agnitum acknowledge that this problem is fixed. It is far to annoying even though it saves a lot of time when scanning for malware.
By the way; I'm satisifed with XP and therefore happy to use OSS2007 for now!![]()
I have to agree! caching feature disabled.. I am using the last beta prior to the release. I was quite happy with the performance, but the random behavior of the cache feature is a big problem and therefore my owning a final copy is compromized.![]()
Still looking for a cost effective (preferably free) solution to protection. I also have an old gateway with no protection and quite frankly surfing smartly and using online mail services there has been no problem. This makes me question the validity of purchasing a product may ...
1. Slow down slow down performance
2. resource hog
3. introduce invisible problems as oss cache feature (God knows how many orphan op_cache file a floating in folders that I have not yet seen the need to delete)
OSS2008 is one of the best I have found in my quest. Comodo is also a good (FREE) one but the footprint is bigger. There are others but the price for protection is a big factor for a home user.
Thank god I found this thread!, I have been going mad trying to delete folders. I have been having major problems trying to do a spring clean on my system. Uninstalling old unused programs, clearing temp files etc, however I have ended up with dozens of 'empty folders' which cant be deleted, and even some in the recycle bin which will not go away. I get the 'directory is not empty' error every time I try to delete them. Only when I panicked and ran rootkit revealer did it all become clear, every directory has these two hidden files which are hidden from the API, so uninstallers fail to complete successfully, and manual deletions fail.
How do I turn off this infernal caching and how do I remove these damnd files. I have tried safe mode, numerous deletion programs chkdisk and other methods.
Rootkit revealer discovered 1811 of these little nasties, so I kneed a method of getting rid of them all.
I hate to think what diskeeper will make of this, will it be able to keep thes hiden files together with their parent files of will the filesystem gradually become more and more fragmented.
Agnitum must fix this feature or disable it ASAP if they want to have any credibility.
Tom
These files are normally removed by OP's uninstaller, but, just in case, try:
gmer
http://www.gmer.net/index.php
or hijackthis
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
Thanks for that, now reverted back to 4.0.1025.7828 (700) and can delete directories. I think I shal give the new version a wide berth for a while.
Another problem occured while trying to download GMER, the site was blocked by IDS, and I couldnt find how to unblock it. I had to reboot. Is this another known missing feature, of is the option to unblock hidden somewhere.
Cheers
Tom
There is an unblock.
Click Firewall in left pane of main gui, at right you should now see the blocked addresses, click the small 'unblock' next to the blocked addresses.
One method would be to turn off the SmartScan option. OSS 2007 has an option to clear the files, OSS2008 may as well. I do not know since it detected an AV and disabled the Anti Malware.Rootkit revealer discovered 1811 of these little nasties, so I kneed a method of getting rid of them all.
