Gaming Tips

Bottom

First switch off DNS Resolving before start the game, if you use GameSpy you should follow switch IE in to offline mode.

Make sure you have all given your games access to all the required ports. This will vary depending on what servers you use. Just visit the web site for the servers that you play and they will have a list of ports that their servers use. These will be the ports to allow for your games. Then switch to [Block Most mode icon] Block Most mode before playing to stop yourself getting dragged back to the desktop when any communication attempt not governed by an existing rule occurs.

Lastly, if you find gaming slower then before you had Outpost installed (this has not been my experience), you may want to turn off the GUI.

Turning off the GUI

Open the Options window and select the 'General' tab:

[General Tab]

In the section labeled 'Miscellaneous' (#2 on the above image) enable (check) the option to Apply rules without need of interface. This will cause Outpost's engine to keep filtering packets according to all existing rules when the GUI is not running. Close the window by clicking on the 'OK' button.

Now right click on Outpost's System Tray icon:

[Outpost's icon in the System Tray]

When the context menu appears select Exit, NOT Exit and Shutdown. Exit will turn off the GUI, but leave the Engine still running. Those of you with versions of Windows that have a Task Manager will be able to confirm that Outpost's engine is still running by viewing the 'Processes' tab of the Task Manager. Exit and Shutdown will kill the engine as well as the GUI so don't select this option.

You can also shutdown the GUI by selecting Exit from the main window's 'File' menu.

To re-start the GUI just double click on Outpost's Start Menu icon. You can also create a config file that will you can switch to when you want to play an online game with all of the above saved in the file (except for turning off the GUI).
