The Attachments Filter plugin options

Glossary Bottom Top

There are three sections to the Attachments Filter plugin options:

1 - File type box

These are the different file types you have Outpost set to filter. Twenty or more file types are already included and you can add more by clicking on the 'New' button.

2 - Action box

These toggles allow you to specify what Outpost should do with the different file types. Currently you can only 'Rename It' and 'Report It'. Early betas allowed you to send the attachment to your resident virus scanner but this has now been removed until Agnitum have investigate the best way to intergrate different virus scanners.

3 - Description box

This gives you at-a-glance information in 'plain English' on the different rules you have specified for each file type in much the same way that a description appears for firewall rules.

How to modify your options for an existing file type

Select the file type by highlighting it. Then toggle the check boxes in the Action box so that they reflect how you want Outpost to handle the file type.

Adding a new file type

Click on the 'Add' button and the File Type window will appear. Enter the file type extension in the Specify file type: text box. In the example below I have entered psp for a Paint Shop Pro file and as the extension is recognized by Windows (because I have Paint Shop Pro installed) Outpost has filled in the .psp file type description for me. Outpost has also displayed the the correct Icon for the .psp file type which will appear in the File type box:

[File Type Window - Paint Shop Pro]

If the file type is unknown to Windows Outpost will describe it automatically and give it a generic icon.

[File Type Window - Generic]

Once you are happy with the description click on 'OK' and Outpost will add the new file type to it's list on the 'E-mail Attachments Filter' tab.

Attachment Filter Log

There are 4 columns in the Attachment Filter log

  1. Date/Time
This is the Date and Time the Action occurred.
  2. From
This is the e-mail address of the sender of the attachment.
  3. File Name
This is the name of the attachment.
  4. Action
This is what Outpost did to the attachment.

File was renamed means that Outpost renamed a file with the suffix '.safe', thus making file types recognized by windows unexecutable until the suffix is removed.

File was reported means that Outpost displayed a popup telling you that the attachment was received.
